NEW TO BEHOLD...the Readhead s-built Turkistan.
MY thanks to readers who continue to get in touch with details of books about Eagle Oil which a correspondent has been trying to source.
Bob Smark tells me that in addition to the book by WE Lucas which several people mentioned, a booklet by Michael Crowdy was published by the World Ship Society in 1966 which gives more details about the ships, right up until the complete absorption of Eagle Oil into Shell Tankers.
One of those who helped out with information about Lucas’s book was Eric Westgarth, to whom I’m also indebted for the picture here of, not a tanker, but Strick Line’s cargo ship Turkistan.
It was taken in the early 1960s at Port Said, when she was still new out of Readhead’s yard here at Shields.
Eric sailed on her as ship’s carpenter between 1963 and 1965. He had earlier sailed in Strick’s Farsistan. The Turkistan became part of P&O in the early 1970s, then underwent several changes of ownership and name, becoming, in succession, the Strathassynt, the Amber Star and, in 1980, the Luc Ngan.
It was as the Luc Ngan that she was eventually broken up at Japan

New MSC Cruises 2012-2013 brochure
Tuesday, June 12, 2012
Bringing stunning destinations, state-of-the-art ships, delicious dining options, great entertainment, warm Mediterranean hospitality and the art of relaxation and well-being to life, the MSC Cruises 2012-2013 brochure is now available in travel agencies and, of course, online at msccruises.com.

The authentic discovery of destinations that MSC Cruises provides for its guests starts here. Colourful, clear and easy to navigate, the new catalogue is packed with textual and visual information about the company’s state-of-the-art fleet of 12 ships, the elegant design by acclaimed naval architects De Jorio Design International,  the over 150 itineraries it proposes around the globe, the excursions offered from these 250 ports of call and the impressive array of facilities and services on board each ship.

The brochure also takes readers on a tour of every aspect of the company’s activities, from its partnership with UNICEF to its innovations in eco-friendly ship design, easy-to-use online services and the range of special promotions on offer.

Among the new and updated sections, readers and travel agents will find a double page feature dedicated to the MSC Group. Highlighting the group’s solidarity, strength, and above all its unrivalled experience of navigating the Mediterranean and all the worlds’ oceans, it’s easy to see that guests will be travelling in the safe hands of true masters of the sea.
Additional new sections for the 2012/2013 brochure include a double page illustrating MSC’s new and fascinating destinations of the French Antilles and the Red Sea, as well as the charming new ports in Europe, Saint Tropez on the Mediterranean sea and Constanta on the Black Sea.

MSC Preziosa, the dazzling new jewel of the MSC Cruises’ fleet, will set sail in March 2013 and will bring the number of ships in the MSC fleet to 13. A double page spread on this precious new addition has also been included to show guests exactly what they can look forward to.

The helpful new section on suites and cabins for families highlights the new Super Family Cabins available on MSC Divina and MSC Preziosa. These cabins spaciously sleep up to 6 people and comprise two connecting triple cabins, two bathrooms and two balconies. Each Super Family Cabin comes at a fixed per-cabin price – regardless of how many people actually use it. A smart concept for smart people.
A new and comprehensive section on special packages provides detailed information about the wonderful food and beverage, onboard ceremonies, anniversary and relaxation packages on offer.

Practical information on safety on board, including information about languages spoken by MSC Cruises’ crew members has been included for guests’ information and peace of mind.

Rounding off the brochure is a general overview of all itinerary maps and a summary calendar for the entire 2012-2013 period. Organized by month and macro-destination, it offers at-a-glance information on which ships are sailing and which destinations they are visiting in any given month and is designed for easy reference.
A must-have catalogue for travel agents around the world, the new MSC Cruises brochure provides all the information devotees of the company will be looking for, and a tantalizing taste of things to come for those who have yet to enjoy the unique MSC Cruises’ experience.
